You might have heard in recent months about the need to find a donor to save the life of a young woman called María Mercedes Ruiz who was ill with a kind of cancer that can be cured by means of a bone marrow transplant.
There are at least other 7 Latins in Canada in a similar condition and many more in Latinamerica and other parts of the world hoping to find a compatible donor outside of their family. The search has been intense. And time runs out for many patients in the waiting list. We want to get into a more pro-active stage. And we need your help to achieve this. The One Match organization (www. onematch.ca), an arm of the Canadian Blood Services is willing to help us to find donors within the Latin Community.
What we need to do is to convince as many Latins as possible to come to a certain place and register. This is a simple and easy process.
We have to consider that if the patient can not find a compatible donor within his/her family, the best chance to find a compatible donor is in their own ethnic group.
We are planning registration events some weekends within the next few months, at these events we will try to find a fair amount of Latins to register. These events are generally from 10 am to 6 pm.

Could you spend some of your precious time helping us with some activity on the event day(s)? We need volunteers during the event for the following activities:
a. Pre-registration of people who want to register
b. Translations: Spanish- English and vice-versa.
c. Registration process (Questions regarding their health status)
d. Supervising the sample collection (A sample of buccal cells)
e. Various activities of information, organization and control at the event

The time schedules are to be defined, we estimate that we would need an average of 3 to 4 hours that day. With your help we could increase the donor bank for our comunity in a considerable form, which at the end it means we could increase the chance to find a compatible donor for the patients in the waiting list.
